A recent study at the University of Iowa looked at the connection between the consumption of diet soda and cardiovascular disease. What they found was shocking. According to the research team’s findings, women who drink 2 or more diet sodas a day were 30% more likely to have a heart attack than women who don’t drink diet drinks at all. Drinking 2 or more diet sodas daily also increase the risk of dying from a cardiovascular event, like a heart attack, increase by 50%.

The study was conducted on 6,000 healthy, postmenopausal women and is the largest study of its kind to date said Igor Cornelson.
The health-threatening problem is not the actual soda, but the aspartame in the soda. When the sugar is taken away, something must replace it to make a beverage palatable. Aspartame has been the go-to artificial sweetener most often used in diet sodas as well as other diet beverages.
Ditching the diet sodas and changing to sugary drinks is not exactly a healthier option. Excessive sugar intake is linked to obesity, diabetes and also cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Ankur Vyas says it’s too soon to tell people to change their behavior based on this recent study. But it does appear that diet or not, soda seems to be an unhealthy choice all the way around
